Hector Langdon volunteered for service in the army in World War I when he was no more than 17 years old, though he gave his age as 20. It was the kind of reckless action he was to take all his life, much to the regret of his solicitor father who wished him to follow in the same profession. Hector would have none of it - it would have been far too boring for his taste. So he drifted from one occupation to another after the war, never really settling down. It seemed he had to be forever on the move. Until he met Eva Gray, and even that meeting was to lead in the end to tragedy.

There's nothing wrong with The Wild One but Pattinson has written a lot better novels such as The Silent Voyage, Skeleton Island, The Time of Your Life, Away With Murder, Blind Date, The Murmansk Assignment, Obituary for Howard Grey, Crane, The Animal Gang, Spoilers, The Golden Reef and Life Preserver. In The Wild One the reader follows the life of Hector Langdon a young man whose father wants him to follow him into life as a solicitor but he will have none of that. He lies about his age to join the army in World War I, joins the British Police in their fight against the IRA, travelled the USA and has other adventures which bring him close to the hand of death. The Wild One is also a little bit predictable and has cousins falling in love and wanting to sleep with each other with no mention that there is something wrong with this by Pattinson. It is a good read but if you can get it from a library do so as there are better Pattinson novels to pay money for.Pattinson writes in an old man style where his characters use words that show Pattinson is obviously from a previous generation and not quite down with the lingo of today but this style does add something unique and enjoyable to his novels. Buy one of Pattinson's masterpieces instead but check out The Wild One if you can get a cheap or free copy.
